Wilmington beaches are around 2.5 hrs and they are best to come back on same day.

What do you want to do in the beach? If it is just getting into the water then try Jordan Lake (South West of Raleigh) or Falls Lake (North east of Raliegh). They are with in 30 minutes, have decent beaches.

all-THANKS for the information!
@BD , Samosa- we want to enjoy the atmosphere, surroundings and the sound of the waves! I personally don't think lakes give such a beachy feeling :)

Looks like Wilmington beach is the closest beach. Its little over 2 hours. Long weekends the traffic will be bumper to bumper and takes longer time. I was there once and I liked the beach.

Here is google map maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=cary,+nc&daddr=Wrightsville+Beach,+NC&hl=en&geocode=FbQiIgIdQ-VN-ylDi0r_VL2siTHhS0Ra249WRA%3BFfj6CQId7etc-ymFAR9HAfOpiTF6nHQNGfPTgQ&gl=us&mra=ls&sll=34.195901,-78.018036&sspn=0.561122,1.352692&ie=UTF8&z=8

Share your experience on what to do at the beach (other than taking bath!!), where to eat..
