Hi,
We are expecting a baby in another 2 months. We have a family function in india in May. We are wondering whether we will be able to get a visa/pio for our baby before that time. Could anyone give some info like,
- How long will it take to get birth certificate.
- How long will it take to get SSN
- How long will it take to get Passport?

Thanks,
Durai.

Hi Durai,

Congratulations and good luck with your new arrival.

Birth certificate usually takes 2 weeks after the birth.

SSN in a month.

For passport 4 to 6 weeks after you apply.

I think you may get by first week of May if things are taken care immediately after the baby is born.

Hope this helps.

Congratulations!!!

The following information is (i) ‘not’ for NC. YMMV, hence and (ii) I am referring to 6/7 years older information. Please check with the local authorities for current updates on this.

Birth Certificate – around 2 weeks. We went a month before the actual delivery, to the office, got to know the procedures (directions to the building, parking, and the actual person dealing with the process, documents to be submitted, notary, etc.) so that actual visit was a cake walk. We applied for 10 copies then and there itself to avoid any future urgencies (1 – parents for keep sake, 1 – in-laws for keep sake, 1 – for us for keep sake, 1 – bank locker, 1 – fire safe, rest – spare ‘working’ copies).

SSN – You don’t need SSN to travel to India, I suppose. Please go through the Indian Embassy rules carefully. Having said that, 3 – 4 weeks is the approx. time frame you can look for. You should also check with your doctor / hospital to updated yourself on this.

Passport – we got it in a month. Check with local post office for photo requirements. www.epassportphoto.com/ might be worth visiting to ease out your ‘photo requirements’ for both US Passport and Indian Visa (photos for Indian documents are of different sizes). It is free and don't need to sign up even.

Visa / PIO / OCI – Go for visa first as it takes only 1 week (and is normally 6 months visa). PIO might take around 4 weeks. OCI – 3 months (out of which you would have the passport with the office for a week or so only). While taking visa and then taking PIO / OCI is definitely spending more money, but playing safe too (for travel with short notice).

If you keep your documents and procedures as organized as you can, I am sure you will “smoothly” make it for May.

Congratulations once again and keep up the good health practices more importantly in the current season.

Thanks for reading . . .

If you pay a little bit more, you can get your child's passport in less than 2 weeks.

Besides, paperwork, you may want to check with pediatrician about medical aspects before you go.

I will wait for 2 months for 'congratulation'.

The only challenge we had was to take the passport picture of our new born. It takes multiple tries to get the eyes/ears and chin aligned. You might want to go to a studio where they can lay the baby flat to take pictures.

A pediatrician would very diplomatically hint and document the conversation to avoid legal hassles. Your travel decision should largely be based on baby & mother's health. Indian functions or travel are not easy :)

Here's a service that's really easy to use, affordable, and really convenient for the customer:

www.mypassportphotos.com

You upload the image you want used, and they resize it accordingly. You then have the option to download the image, have it sent to your home if you don't have a printer, or to pick it up at your nearest Walmart, CVS, or Walgreens. A professional reviews the images and is photoshopped to ensure that the image complies to government regulations. It's available as a web app, iOS, and Android, so it's easily accessible on all common available platforms. It's really simple to use, with very little work on your part. Hope someone finds this useful!
