Pratham Annual Gala 2009 was held at "Events at Newton Square" banquet center in Raleigh, NC on Nov 7th.

The program started with the welcome speech by Arun Shukla, followed by the Lighting of Lamp by award wining author and poet Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni,Triangle's own accomplished author Dr.Sudha Om Dhingra and Aneeta Bhakta.The welcome song was performed by the children of Sanskar Academy which is run at HSNC.

Pratham's update:


President of Pratham's NC chapter Dr.Om Dhingra presented a speech about the Pratham NC update. He stated Pratham's movement is the first movement in India after the Salt Satya graha. Read India reached 34 million children in middle of this year, trianed more than 448,000 volunteers and 605,000 teachers in 2008-2009.

Last year the money raised by Pratham NC,sponsored 10 read India districts.Hewlett Foundation has given Pratham a 3 year grant of 9 million dollars.Atul Vardachari on the ground work under Pratham Health Initiative reached 65,000 children.

Shifting gears to our community, Pratham NC raised $23,000 in 2005 to 190,000 raised in 2008 came a long way and are the fastest growing chapter for Pratham USA.

Pratham NC goal for this year was to raise $190,000. As of Nov 7th 2009 evening, all the pledges and ticket sales had resulted in a total of approx. $150,000. When shared this news with Pratham NC Advisors they graciously offered to match dollar for dollar they raised on the event! So that brings out total target for today to only $20,000".

Pratham NC advisor Sudha Rathie shared her touching experiences of visiting a Pratham School in India.

Pratham's National sponsor Mr. Himanshu Shah
of Shah Capital Management presented a check of $36,000 to Dr. Om Dhingra. He has donated $100,000 to Pratham in his past 4yrs.

Chitra Banerjee: was the key note speaker of the event. Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is an award-winning author and poet. Her themes include women, immigration, the South Asian experience, history, myth, magic and celebrating diversity.

She writes both for adults and children. Her books have been translated into 20 languages, including Dutch, Hebrew, Russian and Japanese. Two novels, The Mistress of Spices and Sister of My Heart, have been made into films. Her short stories, Arranged Marriage, won an American Book Award. She teaches Creative Writing at the University of Houston.

The evening featured by performances of Sanjeev and Armeen Ramabhadran was filled with the evergreen melodies of the Bollywood from 50's to 70's. The talent of the artists was very lively and heart touching.

This fundraiser raised over $150,000 which will be used to sponsor districts in the Read India program.
