Vonage is good if you talk daily all over the world (specified 60+ countries)...and little expensive

Skype and MagicJack is good if internet at your place (in India) and economy

ooma....I never heard about it.

If you speak weekly once / twice....calling card is the best option.

I used MagicJack and now using Vonage.

Have been using Ooma for almost 1year now - primarily for local/long-distance calls. For India calling which is not that often, we use Reliance.

Ooma - an alternative to Vonage - basically is a VoIP modem device that you buy for around $150-$200 as one-time purchase and never-ever pay for VoIP charges. Within a year you should be able to recover the cost and after that it's free! It's pretty much like Vonage in the sense you can use your regular handset and make calls to landlines/mobile etc. The key difference being for Vonage you pay monthly charges as long as you keep their service, with Ooma you buy the VoIP modem device outright - although the initial cost is high but the returns are even higher after a year!

The voice-quality is crystal clear and is easy to setup within minutes.

I would choose between Vonage and ooma, ooma is available fro 199 at amazon - www.amazon.com/Ooma-Telo-Free-Phone-Service/dp/B002O3W4LE/?tag=dealscom-20

Good Luck

I'd suggest buying it from Costco - since it includes 6 month free premium membership (read-up this feature on oooma.com - provides you instant 2nd line) and $50 (or so) of credit for international calling.

the advantage of buying from costco is the easy returns incase you are not satisfied.

We just bought OOMA Telo from Amazon for $199 and it works great. No complaints so far. It was just the one time investment. From now on I just need to pay around $3-4 max every month . They have everything what you need. From Voicemail, callerID, 911 service to all whatever you get from Vonage.I totally liked the quality and services. Voice quality is very very clear. Never spoke to their Customer Care as we never needed them. Installation was completed in 30 min max. We took the new NC number. I don't make calls to India everyday so my international calling expense is around $5 @ 1.6 cents per minute. If we decide to take the international calling package for India from OOMA it would be 500 min for $5 that would cost us much cheaper than 1.6 cents per minute. If I would have taken Vonage I would have paid $36 every month all inclusive with 1 year agreement. So after calculating all the cost OOMA equipment will pay for itself in 6-8 months. I wonder why they don't advertise themselves. They are giving amazing services at no cost.

how is ooma better than vonage ?
When the vonage 1 year contract expires - do we return the adaptor back to them ?
Also with vonage we get free unlimited international calls to 60 countries that include india.

but with ooma only u.s. calls are included - and then we pay more bulk/standard rate to make international calls.

just called up vonage and ooma.
like someone mentioned above, ooma is cheaper if you need the services for more than a year...
with vonage it's actually 34 inc all taxes per month for as long as you use it.
even if we pay bulk rate to make international calls - it's still cheaper with cheap international calling rates and 4.99 for 500 minutes.

Hello guys,

while we are discussing about vonage/ooma.
I've just come across voipcheap.com
has anyone tried this ?

it says -add credit - still get free calls to all u.s. local and mobile + many other countries including India ,
and rates for some countrirs not free/included are very cheap.

any suggestions?

Hi Sunita,

No offence. I already mention Ooma is really cheaper if you don't make many international call. I don't call India everyday. For me 500 minutes are more than enough if I make 1 call for 15-20 minutes and call all 7 days a week. And other than India I don't call any other foreign country. Just try to calculate urself. I paid one time payment for $199 for the OOMA instrument. And now I am paying monthly $8 that includes all my calls to India. Currently I am using calling card from Pinlessworld.com where I get 1.6 cents per minute rate. If I would have taken Vonage with 1 year contract I would have paid $34-35 per month. For 12 months I would have paid 12*34=408 per year till the time we retain their services.
Now if we calculate OOMA for 1 year $199+(8*12)=$295 and remember I am just paying $3.47 per month (only regulatory taxes) for OOMA where all my calls to USA and Canada is included. And trust me I am calculating every month but I am not able to use more than $5-7 per month on calls to India.
I have seen all my friends with Vonage they were very excited about unlimited calls to India but later they said "we don't make everyday calls to India. There is nothing to talk everyday"

and should your family back home find out that your calls are free and you call too much, they'd think that you are such a pain

Re:Skype, vonage, magic jack, ooma, 1 year, 5 months ago #8529

I don't know how they feel if you start calling everyday but in my family everybody is so busy including my mother that if I'll start calling everyday they will get worried that I am not utilizing my time and my father will have his favorite dialog 'I have sacrifice so much for your study and you are wasting yourself sitting at home.' My parents are professors and I get lecture whenever I make long ISD calls. Besides people are really busy in India and US-India time difference is such that either we are spending family time in the evening or they are spending their family time in the evening and thinking about calling in the morning is completely out of question. Everybody is running out of time in the morning.

Thanks to Sanju for suggesting OOMA. I am fully satisfied with my purchase and very excited about my saving after recovering the cost of instrument. I came to know about OOMA after reading this thread. It helped. Really
