Last Saturday, I attended Kathak dance performance by Rachana Ramya Agarwal and Prashant Shah.  The program was arranged by Indian Classical Music and Dance Society (ICMDS).  The artists did a wonderful job of explaining about the performance before each dance.  They started with a prayer and performed together.  Rachana mentioned that Kathak is one of the classical dances and it has more than two thousand years of history.  The Kathaks were the story tellers and performed Ramayan, Mahabarath and mythological stories.

Prashanth Shah started his solo performance in teentaal followed by dhamar taal.  The dhamar taal is very difficult piece due to its irregular beats (5+2+3+4) and it’s a masculine taal.  He showed the excellent footwork that involved grace and masculinity.  He explained about importance of hand gestures, usage of space around him and subtle movements to create a beautiful dance.

Located adjacent to the Research Triangle Park, Morrisville has a richly diverse population, including a considerable number of South Asian Americans. In the November 8 election for Morrisville Town Council (At-Large), there is one name people can recognize for his sheer hard work and dedication for public service - Steve Rao. Mr. Rao's campaign message is simple and powerful - North Carolina needs jobs, Wake County needs transit-system and Morrisville needs a dedicated leadership. Trained as a lawyer and a successful business entrepreneur, Mr. Rao is uniquely poised to meet the challenges of tight state and federal budgets and high unemployment of 10.1% in the Wake County. Mr. Rao's plans include encouraging more entrepreneurs and businesses to start their companies in the town of Morrisville similar to what Durham has established. He wants to improve the quality of life in Morrissville, yet retain its small town feel. Mr. Rao's plans also include linking Morrisville with a Triangle transit-system and protecting the environment.

Mr. Rao is hugely popular within immigrant populations, including South Asian Americans. His election bid has also been endorsed by the North Carolina based Muslim American Public Affairs Council (MAPAC). Mr. Rao ran a very dedicated, grassroots campaign for Wake County Commissioner race last year, which he narrowly lost in a tough race against Tony Gurley. This year's School Board races have clearly shifted the wind in favor of challengers who have a more progressive vision for the future. This favors the election of Mr. Rao as a future member of the Morrisville Town Council.
